PORTLAND, Ore. --- San Diego starter Chris Murphy went the distance on the hill Saturday night as the Toreros overcame the Portland Pilots 5-0 in a West Coast Conference game played at Joe Etzel Field. Murphy earns the complete game shutout as USD claims its second straight win over the Pilots.
Â
After three scoreless innings, San Diego (23-29, 12-14 WCC) scored the game's first two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Two more runs came in the top of the fifth, and San Diego capped the scoring with another run in the sixth inning en route to the win.
Â
Murphy (6-5) used 136 pitches on the night as he kept the Pilots (19-28, 9-14 WCC) off the scoreboard. He did walk five, but he yielded only four hits, while striking out six.
Â
Both of San Diego's runs in the fourth were unearned as a Portland error helped extend the inning. With two outs, Paul Kunst broke the scoreless tie with a two-run double to left-center field. In the fifth, Brhet Bewley led off the frame with a solo home run, pushing the Toreros' lead to 3-0. Another run would follow on a Dan Gardner RBI single, extending USD's cushion to four.
Â
Jay Schuyler provided the run in the sixth when he left the yard with a solo homer.
Â
The Pilots left seven stranded on base for the game, including Ryan Hoogerwerf in the seventh after he led off with a triple. Portland also left two on the base paths in the second, fifth, and eighth innings.
Â
Portland used two pitchers on the night, with the loss going to starter Corbin Powers (4-6). Powers lasted 4.0 innings and allowed only two earned runs. He struck out two, walked two, and surrendered eight hits. Reliever Tate Budnick pitched the final 5.0 innings, allowing just one run on eight hits. Budnick fanned two and walked one.
Â
The Pilots and Toreros next conclude their series at 12 p.m. on Sunday. The game is the final appearance at Joe Etzel Field this season for the Pilots, who will honor their eight seniors with a pre-game ceremony.
