MALIBU, Calif. --- The Pepperdine Waves evened their West Coast Conference series with the Portland Pilots by claiming a 6-2 win on Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Cody Hawken finished with a pair of hits for the Pilots, which included an RBI double and a run scored.
Â
The Waves (29-21, 17-9 WCC), who entered the afternoon sitting in first place in the WCC, did most of their damage in the bottom of the second inning when they surged ahead with a four-run frame. Pepperdine's Chase Lambert began the scoring with a two-run double, and Brandt Belk made it a 4-0 game with a two-run single.
Â
Pepperdine added an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning before the Pilots got on the board with a run in the sixth. After the first two Portland (22-29, 11-15 WCC) batters were retired, Beau Brundage kept the inning alive with a single. Hawken then collected an RBI when he sent a double into the right-center gap, which scored Brundage.
Â
The Waves pushed their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh, and the Pilots tried to rally in the top of the ninth inning. Hawken led off the final inning with a single, and Ryan Hoogerwerf gave the Pilots a pair of runners by drawing a walk. Both Hawken and Hoogerwerf then advanced on a ground out, and Chad Stevens would bring Hawken home when he bounced out to second.
Â
Pepperdine reliever Easton Lucas then sealed the win with the final out of the game.
Â
Portland starter Corbin Powers (4-7) takes the loss as he was responsible for the Waves' four-run second. Powers lasted 4.1 innings, and only three of the runs surrendered were earned. Cameron Richman worked 2.2 innings out of the bullpen, and Jake Hawken pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth.
Â
Pepperdine starter Jonathan Pendergast (7-4) had a solid afternoon to earn his seventh win on the year. He K'd 10 in 7.0 innings and yielded just one run on five hits. Lucas tossed the final 2.0 innings.
Â
The Pilots, who won Friday's opener 2-1 in 10 innings, are looking for their first series win over Pepperdine since 2011 when Portland took two of three from the Waves at Joe Etzel Field. Portland's only series win at Pepperdine came in 2010 when the Pilots swept the Waves.

Tomorrow's finale is set to begin at 1 p.m.
