BELLEVUE, Wash. --- Portland's Cody Hawken, Ryan Hoogerwerf, and Hunter Montgomery each finished with three hits, Henry Cheney belted a solo home run, and the Pilots collected season-highs in both runs and hits as they rolled past the Seattle Redhawks 13-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Bannerwood Park. Portland combined for 18 hits overall, while pitchers Kevin Baker and Tate Budnick limited the Redhawks to just six hits.
Â
Portland (18-26) jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. After three consecutive walks were issued by Seattle starter Jarrod Billig, Hawken proved the first RBI of the game with a single to left field that brought home Matt Kelly. Ryan Kim also scored on the play, courtesy an error, to make it 2-0.
Â
Hoogerwerf followed Hawken with a run-scoring single of his own, and Chad Stevens provided a sacrifice fly before the inning was done.
Â
The Redhawks (30-16) scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning, but the Pilots immediately responded with four more runs in the fourth to push their lead to 8-2. Cheney led off the fourth when he left the yard with his second home run of the year, which was a shot over the left field fence.
Â
A few batters later Kim produced an RBI with an infield single, which was followed by a two-run single off the bat of Beau Brundage.
Â
The Pilots then added a run in the top of the fifth inning before scoring two runs during both the sixth and the seventh en route to the win. The run in the fifth came on a sacrifice fly from Jace McKinney, and the two runs in the sixth scored on a single to right field by Montgomery.
Â
Hawken and Stevens both registered their second RBI's of the game in the seventh to cap the scoring for the Pilots.
Â
Budnick (3-1) was masterful in relief to notch his third win of the year. He yielded just one hit in 5.2 innings, while striking out six and walking only one. Baker got the start on the hill in just his second appearance of the season as he recovers from an injury. The right-hander worked into the fourth inning, striking out two while not issuing a walk.
Â
Billig (1-3) was saddled with the loss, and he was one of four pitchers used by the Redhawks.
Â
Six different Pilots tallied more than one hit, and Portland topped its previous season-best for hits in game of 17, which happened at Gonzaga on April 18. Prior to today, the most runs the Pilots had scored in a game was 11 at Santa Clara on March 29.
Â
Montgomery had a pair of doubles, and Brundage scored three times as eight different Pilots crossed home plate.
Â
The Pilots and Redhawks next conclude their season series tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. at Bannerwood Park. Earlier this year Seattle U topped the Pilots in Portland as the series is currently even at 1-1.
