PORTLAND, Ore. --- Incoming Portland men's soccer recruit Tristan Weber was named the 2017-18 Gatorade California Boys Soccer Player of the Year, it was announced on Wednesday. Weber, who will come to The Bluff from San Clemente High School, is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year Award.
Weber, a midfielder/forward, scored 15 goals and recorded 22 assists this past season, leading the Tritons to the Southern Section Division 1 tournament semifinals. He contributed three goals and two assists in the postseason as San Clemente reached the SoCal Division I Regional championship game in his only year of high school soccer. The South Coast League MVP, Weber spent his junior year of high school in residency with the U.S. Soccer Under-17 Men's National Team in Bradenton, Fla.
Weber also plays for the Orange County SC in the USL, and he spent time in the NPSL with Orange County FC after previously playing with the LA Galaxy Academy Team.
The Gatorade Soccer Player of the Year Award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Portland alum Steve Cherundolo (1996-97, Mt. Carmel HS, Calif.), who starred on the pitch for the U.S. Men's National Team and enjoyed a decorated professional career in Germany, also won the Gatorade California Player of the Year Award back in 1997.
