CORVALLIS, Ore. --- Portland's Taryn Ries scored twice and Kimberly Hazlett added a goal as the Pilots claimed a convincing 3-0 win over the Oregon State Beavers on Sunday evening at Paul Lorenz Field. Ellie Winkelmann assisted on both of Ries' goals for her first career points, and Ries has scored a goal in four straight games.
Ries began the scoring late in the first half, which came on a perfectly placed free kick from Winkelmann. Near the top of the six-yard box, Ries elevated and planted a well-struck header into the back of the net. The goal gave the Pilots (5-4-0) a 1-0 lead at the break, and Winkelmann earns her first career point.
The lead would grow to 2-0 when Hazlett absolutely crushed a shot into the top shelf from 22 yards out in the 51st minute. She received a pass from Jasmine Garibay, turned, took a few touches, and drove one past the keeper for her third goal of the year. Garibay collects her first career assist.
And in the 63rd minute Ries completed the brace after a corner fell to her feet, and she easily finished to push the Portland advantage to 3-0. Kendra Steele and Larkin Russell assisted on the goal, which is Ries' fourth on the year.
The Pilots held a sizable 21-2 edge in shots as Portland records a season-high in that category. Goalkeeper Rachel Lusby only needed to make one save for her fourth clean sheet this fall.
The Pilots began the game aggressively attacking the final third. In the second minute Rachel Khaw had a quality shot from near the penalty spot, but her hit was just high as she was looking for that upper corner.
Portland continued to control the run of play, and in the 27th minute an Oregon State (1-7-0) failed clearance led to a couple of opportunities for the Pilots. Juliana Guthner's attempt from point-blank range was saved by Oregon State's Bridgette Skiba, and Ries' shot on the rebound was blocked by an OSU defender, right on the goal line. Ries would then give the home side the lead in the 42nd minute.
The Pilots next embark on a road trip to Grand Forks, N.D., where they'll face the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Friday. Kickoff is set for 10:30 a.m. (Pacific).
