PORTLAND, Ore. --- Jasmine Garibay scored the game-winner in the 93rd minute and the Pilots collected their third straight shutout as Portland topped the Seattle Redhawks 1-0 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field. It's the first career goal for Garibay, a junior college transfer in her first season on The Bluff.
After 92 minutes of scoreless soccer, Garibay set up the goal when she sent a pass wide to Kimberly Hazlett, who hit a cross back towards the top of the six-yard box. That's where Garibay got a touch on it, re-directing it into the right corner of the net to hand the Pilots (7-4) a thrilling win.
Hazlett claims the assist, her third this fall, and Portland goalkeeper Rachel Lusby made five saves on the afternoon for her sixth shutout on the season. The Pilots, who lead the West Coast Conference in fewest goals allowed (7), goals against average (0.63), and shutouts (6), have not allowed a goal in the last 284 consecutive minutes.
Portland combined for 12 shots against the Redhawks (2-6-2), which included a well-struck shot off the foot of Taryn Ries in the 34th minute. Ries used her right foot to drive an attempt towards the left post, but SU keeper Ariana Romero got there with a diving save.
Madison Carter also had a decent attempt in the 44th minute, but she hit it wide as the two sides entered the half tied 0-0.
It was more of the same in the second half as neither team was able to find the go-ahead goal. Carter hit a driven shot from a tough angle towards the right post in the 70th minute that was saved by Romero, and Ries nearly provided the game-winner on a free kick in the 87th minute. Ries, who had scored a goal in five straight games, hammered a shot towards the frame from 23 yards out, but Romero preserved the tie with another diving stop as the two teams headed for overtime.
Romero also produced five saves on the day as the Redhawks dropped their second straight 1-0 decision.
The Pilots next open play in the WCC with a road trip to San Diego, Calif., where they'll face the San Diego Toreros on Thursday night. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
