PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Darian Slaga exploded for a season-high 25 points, Haylee Andrews added 19, and Julie Spencer corralled 14 rebounds as the Pilots came from behind to top the San Francisco Dons 78-73 in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played at the Chiles Center on Saturday afternoon. Maddie Muhlheim also scored in double digits for the Pilots with 11 points.
Down 10 at the break, Portland (10-10, 2-7 WCC) outscored the Dons (5-15, 1-8 WCC) 42-27 in the second half to claim the win. The Pilots made up that 10-point deficit in the third quarter, and they surged in front when Slaga buried a three-pointer early in the final frame.
From there the two teams exchanged buckets, and with 5:46 remaining Slaga drilled another clutch three to hand the Pilots a slight 65-63 edge. The Dons momentarily tied the score, but Slaga came through again, hitting another from deep. Moments later it was Spencer's turn to connect on a clutch three, and she gave the Pilots a 75-69 lead with only 2:26 left to play.
Portland then tightened up on defense to hold the Dons to just one field goal the rest of the way, and free throws would seal the win for the Pilots.
Andrews was solid all game, converting multiple lay-ups with both hands to help the Pilots overcome the halftime deficit. She also grabbed six boards as the Pilots out-rebound the Dons 45-36. Spencer's 14 rebounds match a season-high.
Slaga was 10 of 15 from the field, and Muhlheim hit three from beyond the arc. Lisa Kaempf provided a spark off the bench, scoring seven points while collecting nine rebounds.
The Dons had a huge second quarter as they shot 66.7 percent to take a 46-36 lead at the half. San Francisco also led by 12 points in the third before the Pilots mounted their comeback. Andrews converted on consecutive lay-ins, Spencer followed with a lay-up, and Andrews ended the period with another one down low as the Pilots were within one going to the fourth.
Shannon Powell scored 19 points to lead the Dons, who finished with a 43 percent shooting percentage. The Pilots shot 47 percent from the field.
Next up for the Pilots is a road trip to Northern California to face the Saint Mary's Gaels on Thursday night and the Pacific Tigers on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off with the Gaels is set for 6:30 p.m.
