LAST WEEK
• The Pilots jumped out to a two-goal lead at San Diego last Saturday, but the Toreros responded by claiming a 4-2 win in a WCC game at Torero Stadium.
• Luke Hendel and Esteban Calvo both found the back of the net for the Pilots in the fifth and 22nd minutes to surge to an early lead.
• The Toreros then pulled one back in the 36th minute before scoring three more times in the second half to collect the home win.
• Miguel Berry scored twice for San Diego, and the loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Pilots.
ABOUT THE PILOTS...
• Saturday's loss at USD ended a season-long four-game winning streak for the Pilots, and the Toreros' goal in the 36th minute snapped a string of 327 minutes of not allowing a goal.
• Portland's previous goal allowed came against Cal in the second half of their non-conference match on Oct. 22, and the Pilots had shutout three consecutive opponents.
• The Pilots are No. 27 nationally in GAA (0.88) and they're 28th in save percentage (.788).
• Portland has allowed only 14 goals this year, which is tied for the second fewest in the WCC.
• Junior goalkeeper Nico Campuzano ranks second in the conference with five shutouts.
• Rey Ortiz is second in the WCC in both assists (7) and assists per game (0.47), and he's 34th nationally in assists per game; he's also fifth in the conference in points (11) and points per game (0.73).
• Ortiz is seventh all-time in program history with 26 career assists.
• Jacobo Reyes is fourth in the WCC with five assists, and he's fifth in both assists per game (0.31) and points (11).
• Luke Hendel is fourth in the league with three game-winners, and he's fifth in goals (5) and goals per game (0.31).
• Hendel was named the WCC Player of the Week on Oct. 6 after registering the game-winner during a 2-1 victory over UC Riverside (Oct. 4) at Merlo Field; Hendel also earned Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week Honorable Mention recognition.
• Earlier this season Hendel landed on the TDS Team of the Week after scoring both of Portland's game-winners against George Washington (Sept. 6) and Davidson (Sept. 8).
• Freshman Delentz Pierre became the second Pilot this season to land on the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week after scoring his first career goal and helping secure a 3-1 win over CSUN (Sept. 20).
• The six goals scored by the Pilots during a 6-0 win over Davidson on Sept. 8 were the most scored by a Portland team since 2002 when they also won by a 6-0 margin (vs. DePaul); six different Pilots accounted for each of the six goals.
• Offensively, the Pilots have out-scored their opponents 24-10, and 12 different players have scored a goal.
• The Pilots have 25 assists on their 26 goals.
• For the second straight season, senior midfielder Rey Ortiz was named to the Preseason Watch List for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which is awarded annually to the best collegiate player in the nation.
• Ortiz was also named to the All-West Coast Conference Preseason Team, as was senior midfielder Gio Magana-Rivera.
• Portland's 2019 recruiting class was ranked ninth in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer; the 10 newcomers are the program's third straight top-10 recruiting class.
• The Pilots received a first-place vote and were selected to finish second in the WCC this season by the league's eight head coaches.
THE OPPONENTS
• With their 2-0 win over LMU last weekend, the Saint Mary's Gaels claimed their second straight WCC Championship.
• The Gaels rank fifth nationally in goals per game (2.63), and they're No. 10 in goals-against average (0.62); they've out-scored their opponents 42-10.
• Senior forward Anders Engebretsen is one of the top offensive players in the nation, ranking 11th in goals per game (0.81) and 18th in assists (0.50).
• Senior keeper Remi Prieur has 11 shutouts, which is the second most in the country; his GAA 0.623 ranks 10th, and his .808 save percentage is 12th.
• Three-time and reigning WCC Coach of the Year Adam Cooper is in his 14th year at the helm of the Gaels, who he led to the third round of the NCAA Playoffs a year ago.
THE STAFF
• Head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt is in his fourth year at the helm of the Pilots.
• In his first year on The Bluff he led Portland to an improbable turn-around en route to the 2016 WCC title and an NCAA Playoff berth.
• It was the program's first WCC Championship since 2002, and it was their first trip to the NCAA postseason since 2009.
• In 2016 Carlin-Voigt became the program's first WCC Coach of the Year since Clive Charles in 2002.
• Carlin-Voigt, who came to The Bluff from UCLA in 2016, was named one of the Top 10 American Coaches under 40 by Top Drawer Soccer in 2017.
• Joining Carlin-Voigt on the staff are first-year assistant coaches Ben Zemanski and Austin Nyquist.
• Zemanski entered the coaching ranks after a lengthy MLS career, which featured a five-year stint and an MLS Cup with the Portland Timbers.
• Nyquist was previously the Pilots' director of performance analysis.
• Assistant coach Emerson De Oliveira is in his fourth year with the Pilots, and he was recently elevated to the program's director of goalkeeping.
