PORTLAND, Ore. --- Gio Magana-Rivera scored in the second minute and the Pilots dominated possession from there to claim a 1-0 shutout over the San Francisco Dons in a West Coast Conference men's soccer game on Saturday night at Merlo Field. It was senior night on The Bluff, and Magana-Rivera was one of six seniors honored by the Pilots with a pre-game ceremony.
Â
The match's only goal came after a nice build up by the Pilots (9-5-1, 3-2-0 WCC), who win their fourth straight game. The Pilots sent a ball into the area from the right wing, that was cleared by a San Francisco (2-12-1, 0-5-0 WCC) defender. But it only got as far as Magana-Rivera, who unleashed a shot from the top of the box that took a deflection before going in. It's the senior's third goal this year, and it gave the home side a lead they would hold on to.
Â
Moments later Magana-Rivera put another quality shot on frame. This one also came from just outside the 18, and the San Francisco keeper Ruben Stuiver made a stellar, diving save to keep the deficit at one goal.
Â
In the 26th minute Rey Ortiz connected with Alejandro Pereira at the top of the box, and Pereira put a well-struck shot on-target. Stuiver was there again for the stop, and the Pilots would take their 1-nil edge into the locker room at half.
Â
Portland would continue to control the pace of play and repeatedly knocked on the door throughout the second half. In the 52nd minute, Luke Hendel hit one from point-blank range that was saved by Stuiver. Magana-Rivera was there with an attempt on the rebound, but he was denied by the post.
Â
In the 58th minute, Ortiz whipped in a free kick towards the top of the six-yard box. Brian O'Hara got a foot on it to re-direct it towards the goal, but it was also saved by Stuiver, who recorded five saves on the night.
Â
Portland controlled 62 percent of the possession, and they finished with a 16-6 advantage in shots. Portland goalkeeper Nico Campuzano was never seriously threatened, but he did produce a trio of saves to register his third straight clean sheet and his fifth overall on the year.
"We controlled large portions of the game and had a very strong start in each half," said Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt. "I thought we put together some excellent attacking phases of play that caused them numerous problems when we played between and behind their lines. It's never easy when a team plays five defenders in a lower block but we had a lot of positive solutions to break them down and created enough quality attacks that I'm sure the fans enjoyed watching. We were just a final pass or touch away from scoring multiple goals.
"Our backline and goalkeeper were excellent again tonight. Our group continues to improve and finishing this four game home stand perfect at Merlo is something everyone in our program is proud of accomplishing."
Â
The Pilots have not allowed a goal since conceding one to Cal in the second half of their non-conference match on Oct. 22, a stretch of 292 consecutive minutes.
Â
Joining Magana-Rivera on senior night were teammates Esteban Calvo, Josh Lagudah, Jabari Newton, Ortiz, and Francesco Tiozzo.

The Pilots next conclude the regular season on the road, beginning with a WCC match next Saturday against the San Diego Toreros at 7 p.m. in San Diego, Calif. The regular season finale is set for Saturday, Nov. 16 at Saint Mary's
