PORTLAND, Ore. – Isaiah White scored a career-high 23 points and Jacob Tryon recorded his first career double-double as Portland won its fourth straight game with a 72-62 victory over UC Davis Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center.
Tryon finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds, including numerous clutch plays down the stretch as Portland pulled away late.
The Pilots (5-1) matched the program's best six-game start since the 1995-96 squad opened with a 6-0 record. This is the sixth time the team has won at least five-of-six games to start a season since 1986.
The second half featured two ties and eight lead changes before a late 11-0 Pilot run gave the home team control.
White opened the run with a jumper and then Tryon converted a putback. Quincy Ferebee followed with a driving layup before Takiula Fahrensohn hit a corner three-pointer. White capped the run with a pull-up, baseline jumper to make it 67-58 with 2:25 remaining. Tryon put the icing on the cake with a shot clock-beating three-pointer with 33 seconds left to finish the scoring.
The Pilots shot 49 percent from the field and have now shot above 48 percent in all five wins. Portland also held UC Davis to 39 percent from the floor.
The Pilots had the touch from distance and knocked down 12-of-20 three-pointers. White was 4-of-5 from distance, while Tryon and Fahrensohn both finished 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.
Portland also shared the ball well and finished with 21 assists for the second straight game.
Playing without second leading scorer JoJo Walker (back), the team had a balanced attack as Malcolm Porter finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Fahrensohn added 10 points off the bench.
White finished 8-for-12 from the field overall and had 10 first half points as the Pilots led by a 36-31 margin at the half. The score line was exactly the same in the second half.
The Aggies (2-5) were led by Matt Neufeld with 18 points.
Portland returns to the Chiles Center to host Incarnate Word on Sunday, Dec. 1 as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The Pilot women host Loyola Chicago at 2 p.m., followed by the men against UIW at 5 p.m. Tickets for all remaining home games are available by visiting
