PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Maddie Muhlheim buried a program-record nine three-pointers and scored a career-best 27 points as the Pilots cruised past the San Diego Toreros 96-74 in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. Eight of Muhlheim's three's came in the second half as she topped the previous UP record of seven, which was held by Jennifer Wassom (2005) and Holly Blades (2016).
Â
After connecting on one three-pointer during the first half Muhlheim was unconscious in the third quarter, connecting on a trio of three's to help the Pilots build a 12-point lead. Haylee Andrews and Kate Andersen each added a lay-ins during the outburst, and Muhlheim continued to knock down three-pointers to make it a 72-52 game late in the quarter. The sophomore would add another one, her sixth of the period, and the Pilots took a 21-point lead into the fourth.Â
Muhlheim and the Pilots continued to pour it on in the final quarter, and when the Portland native drilled a three from the corner she had the program record. Muhlheim would soon add another one from deep, and the Pilots rolled to the win from there.
Muhlheim shot nine of 13 from deep as the Pilots connected on 12 three-pointers overall.
Â
All five Portland (11-14, 3-11 WCC) scored in double figures, and Darian Slaga was hot early before finishing with 13 points. Andrews has 16 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds, Julie Spencer scored 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting, and Jayce Gorzeman had another solid game, providing 11 points.
Â
The Pilots jumped ahead 10-4 early in the first with the help of a pair of three-pointers from Slaga and Spencer. The Toreros recovered to pull within two, but a traditional three-point play by Spencer sparked a quick 11-3 Portland run as they stretched their lead to double digits. Â
Slaga had 11 points in the opening frame and the Pilots began the second quarter with a 27-19 edge. The lead wouldn't last as the Toreros exploded for a 19-2 run, while holding the Pilots scoreless for more than three minutes, to surge ahead. Andrews ended the Portland drought with a lay-up, and Muhlheim followed with a deep three moments later. A Josie Matz steal and a lay-up then leveled the score, and the two teams entered the break deadlocked, 42-42. Â
Leticia Soares led San Diego (8-18, 1-14 WCC) with a team-high 23 points.Â
Portland shot a season-best 53.7 percent from the floor.
Â
Next week the Pilots travel to San Francisco, Calif., for a WCC contest on Thursday night against the San Francisco Dons. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at War Memorial Gym.
