SANTA CLARA, Calif. --- The Santa Clara Broncos jumped out to an early lead before pulling away for a 106-68 win over the Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played on Saturday afternoon at the Leavey Center. Julie Spencer led the Pilots with 14 points.
Â
The Broncos (12-15, 5-11 WCC) shot 51 percent for the game, while holding the Pilots (12-15, 4-12 WCC) to just 36 percent shooting. Santa Clara also connected on 14 three-pointers, and Lindsey VanAllen led all scorers with a game-high 22 points.
Â
Spencer was 6-for-12 from the floor, hit a pair of three's, and led the Pilots in scoring for the 12th time this season. The senior forward also corralled seven rebounds. Jayce Gorzeman, Josie Matz, and Maddie Muhlheim each finished with eight points for Portland.
Â
Spencer began the game by drilling a three-pointer, but the Broncos hit six of their first eight shots to open an eight-point lead. Santa Clara's advantage would grow from there, but the Pilots had the deficit down to eight points after Darian Slaga drained one from behind the three-point arc late in the first quarter.
Â
The Broncos responded with six unanswered points, their lead would grow to 20 points in the second quarter, and Santa Clara never looked back en route to the conference victory.
Â
The Pilots will look to rebound on Thursday night when they host the Loyola Marymount Lions at the Chiles Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
