PORTLAND, Ore. --- Freshman Haylee Andrews overcame foul trouble to finish with a game-high 17 points and four Pilots scored in double digits, but the No. 12 Gonzaga Bulldogs overcame Portland 93-62 in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played on Saturday at the Chiles Center. Sophomore Maddie Muhlheim scored 13 points, while senior Julie Spencer and junior Kate Andersen both collected 11 points.
The Pilots (10-13, 2-10 WCC) jumped out to an early lead as Muhlheim buried a three and Portland held the Zags to just two points during the opening four minutes of the first quarter. Spencer converted a tough lay-up across the lane to make it a six-point game, but the Pilots cooled off from there as the Bulldogs took advantage of some Portland turnovers and soon surged in front. Â
Gonzaga (22-2, 11-1 WCC) took a slight 15-11 edge into the second, and they'd stretch their lead to double digits as the Pilots continued to struggle offensively. Andrews then hit consecutive lay-ups, with the second coming while being fouled, and her three-point play pulled the Pilots within 10. Moments later the deficit was nine after Muhlheim drilled a corner three, but the Zags led 40-23 at the half.Â
Andrews would continue to hurt the Zags with lay-ins during the third quarter, but she'd have to sit down because of foul trouble as Gonzaga pushed their advantage to 21 points. Andersen then knocked down a couple from beyond the three-point arc to help trim the margin, but the Zags entered the final frame ahead 64-43 and they'd seal the win from there.Â
Muhlheim connected on four three-pointers, while Andersen hit a trio of three's. Andrews also added five boards and four assists, and she was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
The Bulldogs featured a balanced offense with five players reaching double figures in points, led by Zykera Rice with 14 points. Gonzaga shot 60 percent for the game, while holding the Pilots to 40 percent shooting.

The Pilots stay at home next week to host BYU and San Diego at the Chiles Center. First is a visit by the Cougars on Thursday night, with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
