SALEM, Ore --- The Portland Pilots track and field teams opened their outdoor season at the Willamette Opener and Teddy Twilight on Saturday. The previous evening, two Pilots from the men's squad also competed at the Linfield IceBreaker.
 
Junior Cole Shugart took first place in the 10,000m at Linfield to start off the season, leading the pack with a time of 30:65.91 for a new PR. In Salem, sophomore Evert Silva led the Pilots with a first place finish in the 1500m at the Willamette Opener. Junior Michael Teran-Solono (4:02.00) and senior Gabriel Haughey (4:03.10) rounded out the top-five for Portland placing third and fourth.
 
At Willamette, juniors Emily Peterson and Maya Murphy-Cook highlighted the day with first place finishes in their respective events, while several Pilots ran their first track and field competitions wearing the purple jersey. Murphy-Cook won the 100m dash in 12.59 and the 200m in 26.28. Peterson crossed the finish line first in the 1500m in 4:54.32. Freshmen Ellie Misuraca (4:56.12) came in just behind Peterson in second and Grace Oswin (4:58.35) in third.
 
At Roosevelt High, sophomore Lacey Conner took first in the 2k steeplechase in 7:05. Senior Dylan Hite finished just behind the sophomore in second place in 7:21.
 
"Today was a great start to the outdoor season," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "Emily Peterson ran a perfect race to win the 1500m at Willamette and Lacey Conner looked amazing in winning the 2k steeple at Roosevelt, especially in the freezing temps. We're looking forward to lots of big things this spring."
 
The Pilots will next be in action at the Lewis and Clark Spring Break Open on March 16.
