LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- Portland senior Julie Spencer scored a game-high 22 points, but the San Francisco Dons pulled out a 76-69 victory Thursday afternoon in the first round of the West Coast Conference Championships at the Orleans Arena.
The Pilots (13-17) led at the end of each of the first three quarters, but the Dons (7-23) got hot late in the fourth quarter as Portland went cold. San Francisco outscored the Pilots 29-20 in the final period. Neither team led by double digits in a game that featured 11 ties and eight lead changes.
Portland senior Darian Slaga drilled a three-pointer with 2:18 remaining to tie the game at 67-67, but Portland would go scoreless over the next two minutes as San Francisco steadily pulled away.
Pilot freshman point guard Haylee Andrews played a phenomenal all-around game and finished with 18 points, three rebounds, seven assists and three steals while playing all 40 minutes. Slaga added 17 points, four rebounds and three steals.
Spencer and Slaga concluded impressive four-year careers that saw them reach various statistical milestones.Â
The pair became the 25th and 26th players to eclipse 1,000 career points for Portland earlier this year. Slaga finishes her career No. 16 on the Pilot all-time scoring list (1,221), fourth in career free throw percentage (.799) and sixth in three-pointers made (148).
Spencer ranks third all-time in rebounds (756), 10th in free throw percentage (.767) and 17th in scoring (1,178).Â
Spencer got off to a fast start with nine points in the first quarter as Portland took a 21-16 lead after the first period. The teams exchanged leads and were tied twice in the second quarter, but an Andrews jumper and three-pointer from Spencer broke a 27-27 tie and Portland led 34-32 at the half. The Pilots maintained a 49-47 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Portland came into the game shorthanded as a pair of key guards were injured in the last week. Sophomore guard Maddie Muhlheim injured her hand in practice on Tuesday and was unavailable, while sophomore guard Josie Matz missed her second straight game with a knee injury. San Francisco was also without its leading scorer, point guard Shannon Powell, who did not suit up due to injury.
The Dons advance and will face No. 5 seed Loyola Marymount on Friday at noon. For complete WCC Championships coverage, visit theÂ
