PORTLAND, Ore. --- For the second straight year, Portland men's soccer midfielder Rey Ortiz was named to the initial MAC Hermann Trophy watch list, which was announced on Thursday by United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club. Ortiz, a senior midfielder who earned all-west region and all-conference accolades last fall, was also named to the MAC Hermann watch list in 2018.

The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year's winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 10, 2020 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.

Last fall, Ortiz landed on the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region First Team and he was voted to the All-WCC Second Team. He scored three goals and added three assists during his junior campaign. As a sophomore in 2017, Ortiz ranked second nationally in assists per game (0.76) and he was third in in the country in total assists with 13. He was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Best XI Second Team, the United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region First Team, and the All-WCC First Team. He also scored six goals as a sophomore, which ranked third in the WCC, to give him a league-high 25 points.
