SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Portland seniors Gio Magana-Rivera and Rey Ortiz were both voted to the All-West Coast Conference Preseason Men's Soccer Team, while the Pilots received a first-place vote and were selected to finish second in a vote of the league's eight head coaches.
Â
The Saint Mary's Gaels topped the preseason poll with seven first-place votes and a total of 49 points. Portland earned 37 points, which was just ahead of third-place San Diego (34 points).
Â
The Pilots are coming off their second playoff visit in the past three years as they reached the second round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. This fall they return 17 players from that team, including Ortiz and Gio Magana-Rivera, who both earned all-west region recognition last season. Ortiz collected three goals and three assists in limited action as a junior, while also landing on the All-WCC Second Team. Magana-Rivera was an all-conference first-team pick after producing two goals and a team-best five assists.
Â
Pacific (28 points), San Francisco (26 points) and Santa Clara (23 points) follow San Diego in successive order in fourth, fifth and sixth, while Gonzaga (14 points) and LMU (13 points) round out the balloting.
Â
The Pilots open the regular season this week when they host the Colgate Raiders on Friday night at Merlo Field. Kickoff for the opener is set for 7 p.m.
