SEATTLE, Wash. --- Portland created quality chances all night long against the Redhawks at Championship Field, but in the end Seattle U overcame an hour weather delay and the Pilots to prevail 2-0 in the Caffe D'arte Coffee Cup played on a wet Thursday night. Seattle scored a goal in the first half before adding another in the second.
Â
The Redhawks (2-1-2) scored the night's first goal when they capitalized on a corner kick on the 18th minute. Declan McGlynn sent a low ball towards the near post, and Noe Meza got a touch on it to re-direct it towards the Portland frame. The ball then appeared to deflect off a Pilot before finding the back of the net, handing the home side the early one-goal edge.
Â
Down a goal, the Pilots (2-2-1) created a handful of chances during the first half, including when Rey Ortiz tried to bend one inside the left post. The shot was wide by only a few inches as the score stayed 1-nil.
Â
In the 30th minute, the Pilots were awarded a rare free kick inside the area after the Seattle U keeper picked up a back pass from one his defenders. Ortiz then took the free attempt from the left corner of the six-yard box, but it was blocked and cleared by the Redhawks.
Â
Ortiz also just missed with a free kick from 20 yards out in the 32nd minute that was high of the bar, and Jacobo Reyes had a strike saved moments later allowing the Redhawks to take their 1-0 lead into the break.
Â
12 minutes into the second half, the skies opened and the match was delayed by 60 minutes due to lightning in the area.
Â
After the game resumed, the Pilots were the more aggressive team and continued to knock on the door. On a free kick from 25 yards out, Reyes nearly finished top shelf with a hit, but the shot was tipped over the crossbar by goalkeeper Akili Kasim.
Â
The Pilots continued to pepper the SU frame with shots throughout the second half. Luke Hendel had one blocked in the 69th minute, and Gio Magana-Rivera hit one high moments later.
Â
In the 77th minute, Brian O'Hara had a loose ball fall to his feet in the center of the 18-yard box. He sent one towards the goal, but it was denied by Redhawks.
Â
Harrison Kurtz then added an insurance goal, which came against the run of play in the 81st minute. On a ball that hit off the right post, Kurtz finished into the right corner of the net to give Seattle a two-goal cushion.
Â
The lead would stand to give the Redhawks the inaugural Caffe D'arte Coffee Cup.
Â
The Pilots next head to Madison, Wis., for a non-conference match against the Wisconsin Badgers on Sunday night. Kickoff at McClimon Track/Soccer Complex is scheduled for 5 p.m. (Pacific)
