SEATTLE, Wash. --- No. 10 Washington scored the game's only goal in the 81st minute and the Pilots couldn't find the equalizer during the final nine minutes as the Huskies claimed a 1-0 win over Portland in a non-conference men's soccer game played on Sunday evening at Husky Soccer Stadium. Both teams finished the match with only 10 men as the two sides each lost a player due to a red card in the second half.
Â
UW's goal came on a free kick with only nine minutes remaining in regulation after the Pilots were called for a foul at the top of the 18. Ethan Barlow then took the free attempt, and he planted a well-struck shot into the corner of the net, inside the right post to hand the Huskies a 1-0 edge.
Â
Moments later Washington's Imanol Rosales was shown his second yellow of the night, meaning the northwest rivals were both playing a man-down. But the Pilots (4-3-1) were unable to capitalize, and the Huskies (8-1-0) soon had their seventh shutout of the season.
Â
The Huskies opened the game with an initial surge in Portland's half of the field, which was handled by the Pilots, who then created some quality chances of their own. After working the ball up field, Gio Magana-Rivera had possession inside the 18-yard box, cut back, and hit a shot towards the upper right corner of the frame. The attempt in the seventh minute was just high, as the game remained scoreless.
Â
Alejandro Pereira followed with a shot over the cross bar moments later, and Magana-Rivera hit another one high from distance in the 14th minute.
Â
At the other end, the Portland defense was solid, and goalkeeper Josh Lagudah registered a save in the 26th minute. He produced a clutch kick save in the 30th minute as the game was still scoreless at the break.
Â
Portland's Rey Ortiz opened the second half with a quality strike when he gained possession just outside the box, took a couple of touches, and hit one towards the right post. It was just wide and the game would continue tied 0-0.
Â
In the 58th minute, the Pilots earned a corner, and Brian O'Hara nearly recorded the day's first goal. Jacobo Reyes sent in the corner, and O'Hara was there to get a solid header on it, but it too was wide.
Â
Magana-Rivera then had another look at a possible goal in the 72nd minute. He collected a loose ball inside the area and sent one towards the frame that Washington's keeper Bryce Logan made a game-saving stop on. O'Hara was there to try to put away the rebound, but it was denied by a Washington defender.
Â
The Pilots then went a man-down after R.J. Stretch was shown his second yellow of the game following a tackle.
Â
The Pilots next return home to host the UC Riverside Highlanders in a non-conference match on Friday night. Kickoff at Merlo Field for the Pilots and Highlanders is set for 7 p.m.
