SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- Haylee Andrews finished with 24 points and eight assists, Alex Fowler had 17 points and nine rebounds, and the Portland Pilots won on the road defeating the San Francisco Dons 73-66 at War Memorial and the Sobrato Center on Thursday night. Kate Andersen added 16 points for the Pilots.
Â
Portland improves to 10-7 overall with the win, and they even their WCC record at 3-3. It's the first time the Pilots have won three of their first six conference games since the 2010-11 season.
Â
The Pilots jumped out to an early lead against the Dons (7-11, 0-6 WCC) with the help of 11 first-quarter points by Andrews. The sophomore point guard connected on a pair of three-pointers, and Fowler followed with one from deep to make it an 11-4 game. Andersen also drilled one from beyond the arc as Portland's lead grew to nine-points, and the Pilots led 25-18 at the end of the period.
Â
Portland stretched their advantage to 11 points in the second quarter after a lay-up by Fowler, but the Dons responded with an 11-0 run to tie the score. The Pilots recovered momentarily before the end of the half, but the score was level 35-35 at the break.
Â
San Francisco then surged in front to begin the second half, at one point claiming a six points edge. That's when Maddie Muhlheim buried a three-pointer, Fowler converted down low, and a pair of free throws by Andrews pushed the Pilots back in front.
Â
The Pilots carried their momentum into the final frame, and when Muhlheim buried a three-pointer, Portland's lead was eight points. The Dons tried to mount a late run, but Andersen came through with a clutch three-pointer to make it a 10-point game with 5:13 remaining. The Pilots then held on from there to seal the road win.
Â
Portland finished with a season-high 10 three-pointers, and they only turned the ball over nine times, which is a season-low.
Â
Muhlheim was solid defensively, collected six steals, and she scored 11 points. Lauren Walker corralled eight rebounds.
Â
Lucie Hoskova led the Dons with 21 points, and teammate Mikayla Williams recorded a double-double with 20 points and 13 boards.
Â
The Pilots next make the short trek south to play the Santa Clara Broncos in a WCC contest on Saturday. Tip-off at the Leavey Center is set for 2 p.m.
