PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Alex Fowler recorded another double-double, Kate Andersen scored a team-high 19 points, and Haylee Andrews overcame foul trouble to finish with 18 points as the Pilots pulled away from the Loyola Marymount Lions to win 74-49 in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played on Thursday night at the Chiles Center. It's the fourth straight win for the Pilots.
Â
The first half was close as both teams were active on defense, but the second half belonged to the Pilots, who out-scored the Lions 41-24 after the break. LMU was within six points early in the third quarter, but a three-pointer from the corner by Andrews sparked a quick 11-0 run to put the Pilots ahead 46-29.
Â
Andersen followed the Andrews' three with a steal and a lay-in, and Fowler provided a break-away lay-up of her own after another LMU turnover. The margin was still 17 a few minutes later after Andersen connected on a jumper, and Portland took a 52-41 lead to the final frame.
Â
The Lions scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to briefly pull within six, but again the Pilots had an answer, this time with a 13-0 run. Fowler had a nice move down low during the surge, and Andersen dropped a step-back jumper as the Pilots took control. A deep three-pointer from Maddie Muhlheim made it a 17-point game, and after Jayce Gorzeman converted a pair of free throws the Pilots were ahead 65-46 with 5:13 remaining.
Â
The lead would only grow from there as the Pilots improved to 12-7 overall and to 5-3 in the WCC. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for LMU, who drop to 7-14 and 3-5.
Â
It's the fifth double-double this season for Fowler, a freshman forward who collected a team-best 10 boards. Fowler is the reigning WCC Player of the Week, and she leads the league in scoring with a 17.4 points-per-game mark.
Â
Andersen corralled seven rebounds, and Andrews added six. Andrews, who leads the conference in assists, provided eight dimes for the night.
Â
LMU's Jasmine Jones scored a game-high 26 points, to go along with nine rebounds.
Â
Neither team was able to create much separation in the first quarter, but the Pilots did claim a seven-point edge in the second after Keeley Frawley hit a lay-in on a nice feed from Andrews. From there the Lions stayed within reach, and the Pilots took a 33-25 lead into the locker room at half.
Â
The Pilots next welcome the Pepperdine Waves to the Chiles Center on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game.
