PROVO, Utah --- The Portland Pilots opened a big lead over Brigham Young in the third quarter before defeating the Cougars 57-48 in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played on Saturday afternoon at the Marriott Center. Keeley Frawley finished with a team-high 14 points, with 12 of those coming on four key three-pointers.
It's the first WCC win for Portland's first-year head coach Michael Meek, and the Pilots improve to 8-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The first quarter was an offensive struggle for both teams, but the Pilots kept it close with the help of five early points from Kate Andersen. The senior guard opened the scoring with a short jumper in the paint, and she followed that with a corner three. Portland connected on just four of their first 22 shots and trailed 13-7 after the first period.
Maddie Muhlheim opened the second quarter by draining a three-pointer, and moments later Lauren Walker leveled the score with consecutive buckets down low. Frawley then buried a three to put the Pilots in front for the first time, and Muhlheim followed with one from deep to make it a 20-16 game with 5:09 left in the half.
Portland's run continued with the help of a three-point play from Walker, and the Pilots lead grew to seven points. The Cougars did cut into the deficit from there, but the Pilots recovered and took a 29-22 advantage into the locker room at the break. Walker had a career-high 12 points during the first half.
Alex Fowler scored her first two field goals to begin the third quarter as the Pilots stretched their lead to nine points. The difference was still nine after Haylee Andrews converted a fast break lay-in, and Frawley followed with a three-pointer to make it a 38-26 game.
A few minutes later Frawley connected from deep again, and Fowler knocked down a baseline jumper as the Pilots extended their lead to 16 points. The Pilots limited the Cougars to just seven points in the third, and they'd take a 45-29 edge to the final frame.
The Pilots continued to pay solid defense in the fourth quarter as the Cougars tried to climb back into the game. They did cut the deficit down to single digits with 3:32 remaining, but the Pilots hit enough free throws to push their advantage back up to 12 points.
And then with 42 seconds left to play, Frawley sealed the dub by burying a game-clinching three-pointer from the right corner.
The Pilots snap a string of 20 straight wins in the series for BYU, and it's the first Portland victory over the Cougars since also winning in Provo in 1999.
Frawley was four of six from deep to match a career-high in points. Andrews also scored in double figures for the Pilots, adding 10 points.
Paisley Johnson led the Cougars (7-7, 2-2 WCC) with 14 points, and Sara Hamson finished with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and seven blocks.
The Pilots next return home for a pair of WCC home games next week at the Chiles Center. On Thursday, the Pilots host Pacific at 7 p.m., and Saturday brings a 2 p.m. game with Saint Mary's.
