PORTLAND, Ore. – Four Portland players reached double figures as the Pilots defeated Northwest University 74-69 on Sunday in the final game of the U.S. Bank Portland Invitational at the Chiles Center. Senior guard Ahmed Ali led the way with 18 points, while Isiah Dasher chipped in 14 points and five steals.
Eddie Davis and Michael Henn added 13 and 10 points, respectively. Ten different players scored for Portland, who were unable to shake the NAIA Eagles down the stretch.
Portland led by four at the half and went up 12 early in the second period after consecutive baskets by Davis and a transition layup from Dasher made it 44-32. It appeared the Pilots (2-1) were pulling away for good courtesy of seven straight points from Henn pushed the margin to 62-47, but the Eagles used a 12-1 run to close the gap to four points with 2:27 remaining.
Takiula Fahrensohn broke the press and converted a clutch runner and the Pilots got a defensive stop followed by two free throws by Ali to go ahead 69-61.
Northwest U continued to compete and Pa'Treon Lee's layup with eight seconds left made it a one possession game, but Chase Adams knocked down two clutch free throws to secure the win for the Pilots.
Lee finished with a double-double of 15 points and 10 assists to go along with four steals and four blocked shots to lead the Eagles, while Cesar Sandoval added 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Portland forced 23 Northwest U turnovers to gain a 19-12 edge in points off of turnovers. The Eagles shot 47 percent from the field compared to 41 percent for the Pilots, but UP was able to convert 20-of-28 free throws and NWU finished 6-for-8 at the stripe.
Freshmen Hayden Curtiss and Zac Triplett provided good second half minutes off the bench. Curtiss blocked two shots, scored on his only field goal attempt and collected three rebounds in nine minutes. Triplett buried his only three-pointer attempted, grabbed a rebound and had an assist in nine minutes as well.
The Pilots will now prepare to host crosstown rival Portland State on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Chiles Center. The game will be aired on the WCC Network with radio coverage on 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT) beginning at 6:30 p.m.
