EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland Pilots entered Saturday's game against Oregon averaging nearly 82 points per game, but the Ducks locked in on defense for an 80-41 victory at Matthew Knight Arena. Oregon won its sixth consecutive game, while the Pilots had their five-game streak of victories snapped.
The Ducks used a 19-0 run to close the first half and through the start of the second half to create separation. The Pilots went more than eight minutes without scoring before Latrell Jones scored back-to-back baskets, but Oregon scored the next 10 points to push the margin to 60-24.
Portland's previous season low was 72 points in its season opener against Seattle U. The Pilots shot just 21 percent from the field and were 3-for-19 from three-point range on Saturday. The Ducks were also efficient on offense and finished at 57 percent from the field.
Chase Adams scored a team-high nine points for the Pilots, while freshman Hayden Curtiss was effective off the bench with five points, six rebounds and a blocked shot.
Chris Duarte paced Oregon with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while LJ Figueroa and Eugene Omoruyi added 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Early pressure from the Ducks forced four turnovers leading to eight points and a 19-5 edge out of the gates. The Pilots responded with intensity on defense, but it didn't translate to the offensive end as the Ducks took a 35-19 lead into halftime. Portland was just 5-for-27 from the field and didn't score in the final 3:23 of the period.
The Pilots struggled with the size and athleticism of Oregon and were outrebounded by a 42-26 margin and gave up a 48-14 edge in points in the paint.
The Pilots are next scheduled to play Montana State on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at noon live on NBC Sports Northwest and 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT).
