MALIBU, Calif. --- Portland overcame a double-digit deficit and Haylee Andrews scored nine points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of game-clinching free throws in the final seconds, as the Pilots claimed a huge 64-62 road win over the Pepperdine Waves on Thursday night at Firestone Fieldhouse. Andrews finished with a team-high 14 points, Keeley Frawley scored 11 clutch points off the bench, and Kate Andersen collected a career-high 13 rebounds.
Â
Alex Fowler also scored in double figures, chipping in with 11 points, as the Pilots win their third straight to improve to 17-10 overall and to 10-6 in the West Coast Conference. The 17 wins are the most for Portland since compiling 18 during the 2009-10 season, and the 10 conference victories are the most since the Pilots also won 10 in 2008-09.
Â
The Waves entered the game just a half-game back of the fourth-place Pilots in the WCC standings, but they drop to 14-11 overall and to 8-7 in the conference.
Â
After trailing by 10 to begin the fourth quarter, the Pilots came storming back by scoring six straight points to open the frame. Lauren Walker provided the first two buckets, and Fowler made it a four-point game with a lay-in on a nice find by Frawley.
Â
From there Pepperdine pushed their lead back to eight points, but as was the case all night long the Pilots refused to go away. Andrews followed a Fowler field goal with a traditional three-point play, and she'd provide another lay-in just five seconds later to make it a 57-56 game with 4:38 left.
Â
Andrews continued her outburst with another lay-up to give Portland the lead, but the Waves responded with a jumper of their own to surge back in front. Frawley then came through with a go-ahead bucket, and when Andrews found Frawley for a lay-up on an in-bounds play, the Pilots were ahead 63-59 with just 44 seconds showing on the clock.
Â
The Waves had a couple of chances to tie the score on the other end thanks to an offensive board, and Malia Bambrick came through with a three-pointer that leveled the score 62-62 with 14 seconds remaining.
Â
Portland then turned to Andrews one last time, and the sophomore guard drew a foul to send her to the line with a chance to win it. She calmly drained both with four seconds left, and time would run out on the Waves as the Pilots secured the road dub.
Â
Andersen just missed a double-double with nine points, and her efforts on the glass helped the Pilots out-rebound the Waves 46-36. Walker was solid as she produced eight points and eight rebounds, Fowler contributed seven boards, and Andrews tallied seven rebounds and six assists.
Â
Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter, but Andersen connected on a pull-up jumper and a corner three to keep the Pilots close. Pepperdine then made some shots in the second period to open an eight-point edge, but the Pilots cut the deficit to five when Fowler converted a traditional three-point play. The Waves then ended the half with a little run and took a 30-21 lead into the break.
Â
Pepperdine tried to pull away in the third quarter and opened a double-digit lead. Andrews then made a tough shot in traffic, and moments later Frawley drained a deep three that pulled the Pilots within 10. Kelsey Lenzie buried a couple of key three-pointers in the period, but Pepperdine led by as much as much as 15 before taking a 53-43 edge to the fourth.
Â
Bambrick led three Waves in double figures with 16 points, and Hannah Friend claimed a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Â
The Pilots next make the short trek to LA to play the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday, with tip-off at Gersten Pavilion set for 2 p.m.
