PORTLAND, Ore. – Graduate transfer Michael Henn has signed with the Portland men's basketball program, head coach Terry Porter announced on Monday. Henn comes to The Bluff after previous stops at UC Davis and Cal Baptist. Henn (6-8, 225) played prep basketball at Bellevue High School in Bellevue, Wash.
"Mikey will provide great leadership to our team as he is a proven winner at both the high school and college levels," Porter said. "We like his experience as it gives us an older presence in the locker room. Mikey can play inside and out, is a good rebounder and we like his ability to pass the ball. He has a high IQ for the game. We want to continue to recruit the Northwest and to add a player of his caliber from the Seattle area helps us greatly."
"Portland checked all of the boxes," Henn said of his commitment. "I really enjoyed getting to know the coaching staff, they are good coaches and even better people. The WCC is an ideal conference for me to join and I am excited to help lead a turnaround with the team."
Henn sat out last season due to injury, but started 24 games while averaging 6.4 points and 4.1 rebounds during the 2018-19 season. He also knocked down 28 three-pointers, showing his inside-outside versatility. Henn redshirted the 2017-18 season at Cal Baptist due to NCAA transfer rules.
Henn began his collegiate career as a member of the UC Davis program that finished with 23 wins, won the Big West Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history in 2017. He averaged 4.2 points and 1.5 rebounds in 13.1 minutes per game as a true freshman.
A three-year standout player at Bellevue High School, Henn garnered All-KingCo honors each season including league MVP recognition as a senior. He earned Star Times All-Area and All-WIAA State Tournament first team honors in 2016.
"Fans can expect a tenacious rebounder," Henn said of his game. "I love to shoot it, pass well for a big and bring a high basketball IQ."
Henn joins seven other newcomers to the program for the 2020-21 season. The incoming class consists of two incoming freshmen, six JC transfers and one graduate transfer.
"We have added a number of impact players to our roster this spring," Porter said. "We are excited to have the new guys join our returners for workouts this summer."
