PORTLAND, Ore. – Mattias Markusson finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Loyola Marymount Lions to a 75-50 win over Portland Monday afternoon in West Coast Conference men's basketball action at the Chiles Center. Markusson came off the bench and was 10-of-12 from the field and had three blocked shots.
Latrell Jones led three Pilots (6-10, 0-7 WCC) in double figures with 13 points. Eddie Davis and Michael Henn added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
It marked the eighth loss in a row for Portland and sixth straight loss in the series with the Lions (8-6, 3-3).
Portland was without its leading scorer and third best scorer in the WCC as senior guard Ahmed Ali was unavailable due to injury. The Pilots mixed up the starting lineup with freshman Hayden Curtiss earning his first career start.
LMU used its decisive size advantage to control the paint and the boards and shot well from the perimeter. The Lions racked up 30 points in the paint and a 39-15 rebounding margin. LMU also knocked down 13-of-25 three-point attempts.
The Lions used 20-2 run – including seven straight made field goals – to jump out to a 30-11 advantage early. Back-to-back three-pointers from Davis and Clythus Griffith Jr. pulled Portland within eight, but the Lions closed the half with a 39-28 lead.
Jones drilled a three-pointer to make it 41-33, but LMU responded with an 11-2 run capped by a pair of Joe Quintana triples. The margin would grow to as much as 26 points down the stretch.
The Lions finished the game at 55 percent shooting overall, while the Pilots shot 41 percent from the field and 7-for-21 from three-point range. The Pilots also entered the game making nearly 18 free throws per contest, but were just 1-for-2 from the line on Monday.
Portland will return to action on Thursday night at Saint Mary's for an 8 p.m. tip-off televised locally on ROOT Sports. The Pilots will finish the week with a home game against Santa Clara on Saturday at 2 p.m.
