PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior forward/midfielder Luke Hendel and sophomore defender Delentz Pierre were both named to the 2020-21 All-West Coast Conference Preseason Men's Soccer Team, and the Pilots were selected to finish third in the annual vote of the league's eight coaches. Both Hendel and Pierre earned all-league honors in 2019, and Hendel received all-west region recognition as well.
 
Originally from Berlin, Hendel appeared in all 17 games during the 2019 season for the Pilots, collecting team highs of five goals and three game-winners. He was named the WCC Player of the Week in October of that year after registering the game-winner during a 2-1 victory over UC Riverside at Merlo Field, and he also earned Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week Honorable Mention recognition. Previously Hendel landed on the TDS Team of the Week after scoring both of Portland's game-winners against George Washington and Davidson.
 
A left back out of Casa Grande, Ariz., Delentz helped the Pilots register seven shutouts during his freshman campaign. He also had two goals and an assist, and he landed on the TDS Team of the Week after scoring his first career goal and helping the Pilots secure a  win over CSUN.
 
The Pilots are led by head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt, who enters his fifth year at the helm of the program. Portland returns 13 players to this year's squad, while adding a group of 15 newcomers. The current freshmen, along with transfers, were ranked as the No. 6 recruiting class in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer.
 
Portland received 35 votes in the poll and finished behind only league-favorite LMU and Saint Mary's.
 
Next week the Pilots are scheduled to host George Fox in the regular season opener, with kick-off set for 5 p.m. at Merlo Field.
