PORTLAND, Ore. – Joel Ayayi recorded the first triple-double in Gonzaga history and the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs cruised to a 116-88 victory over Portland Saturday night at the Chiles Center.
Ayayi finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 14 assists in just 28 minutes of action. Drew Timme and Anton Watson added 26 and 23 points for Gonzaga, respectively.
The Pilots (6-5, 0-2 WCC) matched their season high in points as well as assists (16) – and drilled a team-best 13 three-pointers – but Portland had no answer defensively against the nation's best offense.
The Bulldogs (12-0, 3-0) shot a remarkable 63 percent from the field and dominated inside with an 80-26 margin in points in the paint. Gonzaga gained a 42-27 rebounding margin and 21-11 edge in second chance points.
Ahmed Ali led five Pilots (6-5, 0-2 WCC) in double figures with 19 points.
Portland freshman guard Zac Triplett made the most of his minutes and finished with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting including 3-of-5 from three-point range. Triplett did his damage in 12 minutes, all in the second half.
Michael Henn finished with 12 points, while Latrell Jones and Clythus Griffith Jr. added 11 each.
The Pilots hung around early before Gonzaga erupted midway through the first half to take a 56-35 lead into halftime. It marked a season-high for points allowed in a half for Portland, which would be broken in the second half by the Zags.
The Bulldogs stepped on the gas out of halftime and pushed the margin to as much as 36 points midway through the period before the Pilots rallied. Portland sophomore point guard Chase Adams ignited a 20-6 run by scoring or assisting on 15 straight points. He found Triplett for a trio of three pointers during the spurt and converted a three-point play. Gonzaga head coach Mark Few brought his starters back in to close it out down the stretch.
Portland falls to 0-9 all-time against No. 1-ranked teams. Gonzaga was also ranked No. 1 when the teams met last season on Jan. 2 at the Chiles Center and won by an 85-72 margin.
The Pilots will now prepare for a rematch against the San Francisco Dons on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Chiles Center. The Pilots led by two at the half against the Dons last Thursday on the road, but San Francisco used a big second half for an 88-64 victory.
