PORTLAND, Ore.---Chelsey Harmon, Noelani Helm, and Alyssa Muraoka each registered new single-match records with 16 kills, 30 assists, and 15 digs, respectively, and the Pilots rallied from a two-set deficit to beat the San Francisco Dons 3-2 in a West Coast Conference volleyball match at the Chiles Center on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Harmon finished the match with an impressive .727 hitting percentage, converting her all of her scores on 22 attempts, and added five blocks in the game. Helm produced another solid all-around performance for the home side, also contributing eight kills, nine digs, and three blocks.
Â
After San Francisco (0-16, 0-8 WCC) prevailed in sets one and two, the Pilots (5-12, 2-6 WCC) turned it around right away in the third frame with back-to-back Helm kills handing Portland a two-point edge at 5-3. Both teams would keep the score tight through the middle, until the Pilots found the next slight advantage at 15-13 on a kill from freshman Emma Swett. San Francisco climbed their way back in it coming out of the media timeout, but that's when Portland generated four unanswered scores on a kill from Jiana Lawson and another from Swett to push them in front again at 19-16. The Dons put on some pressure near the end of the set, but an attack off the hand of Jayde Harris granted the Pilots the first chance at set point. Swett executed next on a dime from Muraoka to seal the set for Portland, bringing the match to 2-1 USF heading into the fourth frame.
Â
USF found themselves in front 4-2 at the start of set four, extending their lead to as many as six at 17-11. Moments later, two big time blocks from Swett and Lawson sparked an 8-0 run for the Pilots, which included two more crucial kills from Lawson to swing the score back in Portland's favor at 19-17. With all the momentum on their side, Harris hammered home a kill before Lawson served up back-to-back aces, using one last kill from Helm to close out the set win for the Pilots and level the match 2-2 overall—forcing the deciding fifth frame.
Â
The home team carried that energy straight into the final installment, building a sizable gap at 8-2 with scores from Harris, Helm, Harmon, and Swett. The Portland defense came up huge in the final rallies, using four blocks to seal a thrilling come from behind win at home.
Â
The Pilots continue their homestead next week with two matches in the Chiles Center, seeing Loyola Marymount on Thursday, October 21st at 6 p.m., before a matchup with No. 24 Pepperdine on Saturday, October 23rd at 12 p.m.
