PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots shined at Merlo Field, taking down the Gonzaga Bulldogs 4-1. The win puts the Pilots at 8-5-0 on the season and 3-1-0 in WCC play.
Gurman Sangha, Ben Ortiz, Luke Hendel and Jacob Babalai all scored for the Pilots. Logan Dorsey had the lone goal for the Zags.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gonzaga had the first shot, but Portland keeper George Tasouris had the tough save to prevent the score.
- The Pilots opened the scoring with a goal in the 18th minute. Gurman Sangha scored his second goal of the season off an assist from Luke Hendel.
- The Zags responded in the 19th minute off a penalty kick. Frankie Ljucovic drew the foul in the box for Gonzaga and Logan Dorsey stepped up and hit the goal.
- The match was fairly even for most of the half until Ben Ortiz broke the tie in the 43rd minute. He took a long pass from R.J. Stretch and launched a rocket past Johan Garibay to make it 2-1 Pilots.
- The Zags had a couple different opportunities in the first 20 minutes of the second half to scored, earning chances in the 58th in 63rd minute. Both times, however, Gonzaga was offside.
- The Pilots capitalized on their chance in the 77th minute. Hendel took it from midfield himself and sent the cheeky chip over Garibay to make it 3-1.
- Portland would score once again in 79th minute off a penalty of their own. Jacob Babalai drew the foul in the box and kicked it in the corner to put the score at its final of 4-1.
PILOT POINTS
- Sangha's goal was his second of the season, his second in two games and the second of his Pilot career.
- Ortiz's goal was his first of the season and the second of his career.
- Luke Hendel is now the assist leader for the Pilots this season with three. The goal was also his second of the year, which puts him in a tie with Alejandro Pereira for the team lead in points with seven.
- The win was Portland's third multi-goal win of the season and also the third win in a row for the Pilots.
- Four of Portland's last five goals have come from players off the bench.
