SAN DIEGO, Calif.---The 25th-ranked San Diego Toreros held off the Pilots 3-0 in a West Coast Conference volleyball match at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday afternoon. USD remains undefeated in league play with the win, sealing the game in set scores of 25-16, 25-15, and 15-19.
Â
Jayde Harris led the way with a team-high 11 kills, Noelani Helm registered 17 assists, and Alyssa Muraoka finished with 11 digs for the Portland side.
Â
Back-to-back Harris kills found the Pilots (4-11, 1-5 WCC) only down by two at 3-5 to open the first frame, but the No. 25 Toreros (12-3, 6-0 WCC) continued to extend their lead. Attacks from Chelsey Harmon and Charity Bradley kept Portland in it, but USD would managed a 10-point edge through the middle that put the score at 12-22. The Pilots looked to spark a comeback after producing a 4-1 run at the end of the set, but San Diego eventually came out on top for the 1-0 lead overall.
Â
Harris got Portland on the board first to begin the second installment, and would add a service ace next to keep Portland within one of USD at 3-4. That's when the Toreros went on a solid run to create some separation in the set and force the Pilots to call timeout. Harris and Harmon would convert scores coming out of the break, and Bradley added another to bring the team in purple within five of USD. San Diego broke away again shortly after, overcoming another Portland push at the end to carry a 2-0 edge into the third set.
Â
The Pilots took the first lead of set three at 2-1 on another Harris kill, and swings from Emma Swett leveled brought the visitors even with San Diego at both 3s and 4s. Harris scored yet another on a dish from Helm to retake the score at 6-5, and the outside hitter added two more shortly following so that the Pilots found themselves ahead by three at 9-6. The Toreros rallied back with two runs to maintain the edge at 20-16, when Harris brought the Pilots within range once again after capitalizing on two scores in a row. San Diego managed to defend the Pilots pressure after that, securing the match in three sets.
Â
Grace Frohling claimed a match-high 19 kills for the Toreros.
"I thought we played well today against a very good USD squad," said head coach Megan Burton. "Our back row really stepped up today passing well and playing solid defense. We are continuing to learn and grow as a unit. This is a tough road trip so we're looking forward to heading home and playing in Chiles this week. Go Pilots!"
Portland returns to the Chiles Center for a three match homestand in the coming weeks, first playing host to Santa Clara on Thursday, October 14 at 6 p.m.
