PORTAND, Ore. – After an impressive 2021 campaign that saw them make the NCAA Tournament for the 17
th time in program history and advance to the second round for the fourth time since 2002, Portland Pilots men's soccer was picked 25
th in the final Top Drawer Soccer Top 25 Poll of the year. The Pilots also received votes in the final United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll.
Here are some highlights from the 2021 season:
- Finished the season with a 11-7-1 record and earned the opportunity to host a home playoff game in the NCAA Tournament for the third time since 2002.
- Finished in the top three of the WCC for the third time since head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt took over as head coach in 2016.
- Fifth fall with a record above .500 since Carlin-Voigt became head coach.
- Defeated the Seattle University Redhawks 3-2 to advance to the second round.
- Defeated four teams that finished in the top 40 in RPI – UCLA, Seattle U, Loyola Marymount and Northern Illinois – which amounts to the third-most wins against top 40 teams among the western conferences (WCC, Pac-12, Big West, WAC).
- Seven players earned All-WCC recognition this season: Jake Arteaga (First Team), George Tasouris (Second Team), Delentz Pierre (Second Team), Brian O'Hara (Honorable Mention), Luke Hendel (Honorable Mention), Sebastian Nava (Honorable Mention, Freshman Team) and Atem Kato (Freshman Team).
- Arteaga, Tasouris and Kevin Bonilla were also all named to the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Third Team.
- The Pilots finished in the top three in the WCC in total points (83), total goals (29), save percentage (0.78) and goal differential (9).
- Four different players earned WCC Player of the Week honors this year: George Tasouris, Alejandro Pereira, Kevin Bonilla and Gurman Sangha.
- Two players were named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week this season: Kevin Bonilla and Delentz Pierre.
- Tasouris became the first Pilot to win multiple WCC Player of the Week awards since Benji Michel did so in 2017
- Alejandro Pereira scored a hat trick against San Diego, marking the first Pilot hat trick since 2017. He also scored two goals against Seattle U in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the first multi-goal game in the playoffs by a Pilot since 2009.
- Tasouris posted the most saves by a Pilot goalkeeper since 2015 and the best goals against average and save percentage since 2016. He was also the first goalkeeper since 2006 to earn an assist since Luis Robles did so in 2006.
In addition to all the in-season accomplishments, the Pilots doled out eight team awards for the season. Here's the list of winners for this year:
- Luis Robles Most Improved Award: Atem Kato
- Connor Casey Rookie of the Year: Sebastian Nava
- Benji Michel Offensive MVP: Alejandro Pereira
- Collen Warner Midfielder of the Year: Jake Arteaga
- Steve Cherundolo Defensive Player of the Year: Brian O'Hara
- Dennis O'Meara Team MVP: George Tasouris
- Colby Trah Pilot Atittude Award: Armando Torres Cruz
- Dirk Van Der Velde Pilot Team Spirit Award: Alejandro Pereira
