San Diego, Calif. --- The No. 20 San Diego Toreros remain unbeaten on the year by defeating the Portland Pilots in West Coast Conference volleyball match played on Thursday evening at Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros claimed the match with set scores of 25-9. 25-17, and 25-10.
Â
Portland (0-6, 0-6 WCC) sophomore Jayde Harris contributed four kills in the match, senior Liz Reich added three, and setters Noelani Helm and Kellie Hughes tallied 13 assists.
Â
San Diego (4-0, 4-0 WCC) controlled the match from the start with stellar service and attacks from all sides of the floor, using an early 8-1 run to carry them on-top through set one.
Â
The Pilots came out with some momentum to begin the second set, as a kill from freshman Chelsey Harmon put Portland on the board first. Another kill from Harris would tie the set at 5-5, and then freshman standout Mia Wesley would give the Pilots their first lead in the game after her kill made it 8-7. Both sides would exchange the lead from there, and Portland would re-claim the lead following Harmon's second attack in the set. Moments later, USD managed to build another scoring run that would give them a sizeable lead over the Pilots and help secure the set win.
Â
The Toreros kept the pressure on the Pilots in set three, answered by scores from Harris and senior Claire Forrest to keep Portland within three at 7-4. But San Diego would eventually find the win to preserve their undefeated season.
Â
"It wasn't our night tonight," said head coach Megan Burton. "It's been a tough road trip for us, four matches in five days. I thought physically we were prepared to compete, and that's a testament to our tough training process. During this road trip we learned a lot about our team and played some good volleyball. We're continuing to find our consistency. Our goal continues to be playing good volleyball for long periods of time. We look forward to returning home next week and getting another chance to compete on our home floor."
Â
The Pilots next return home following their lengthy road trip to host the San Francisco Dons on Tuesday and Wednesday, with those matches both set to begin at 12 p.m.
