LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Freshman Sophia Mattice scored her first career goal and the Pilots took Loyola Marymount to overtime, but the Lions scored the game-winner in the 95th minute to claim a 2-1 win over the Pilots in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game played on Saturday night at Sullivan Field. The match was originally scheduled to be played at Merlo Field, but it was moved south due to recent inclement weather in Portland.
Â
With the game scoreless in the 64th minute, the Pilots (1-1-0, 0-1-0 WCC) earned a corner kick. After MJ Roe sent in the corner, the ball took multiple deflections inside the area before Mattice got a foot on it and buried it into the back of the net to hand the visiting side the 1-nil edge.
Â
The lead was short-lived as LMU (1-0-1, 1-0-0 WCC) produced the equalizer just four minutes later. The Lions' goal also came after a scramble in the box, and it was Madison Thomas who provided the finishing touch.
Â
After neither team was able to produce the game-winner during the final minutes of regulation, it was the Pilots who had the first two shots in overtime. Freshman Nedya Sawan had an attempt blocked in the 91st minute, and senior Taryn Ries sent one wide of the frame in the 92nd minute.
Â
The Lions then scored the game-winner on their only shot in extra time, and it came on a corner kick in the 95th minute. Sierra Dunphy hit the shot, and Skylar Robledo was credited with the assist.
Â
After a slow start to the match offensively for both teams, it was the Pilots who finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots. Sawan led the Pilots with four shots on the night, and she had Portland's first shot of the game in the sixth minute.
Â
The Pilots were the more aggressive team offensively in the second half, and Gabi Brummett had a shot saved in the 54th minute. Sawan dragged a shot wide in the 57th minute, and fellow freshman Aubrey Turner hit one that was blocked just before Portland's goal.
Â
UP keeper Jenny Wahlen made a big save on an LMU shot in the final minute of regulation to preserve the tie and send the game to overtime.
Â
The Pilots remain on the road next weekend when they're scheduled to travel to Santa Clara, Calif., for a WCC match against the Santa Clara Broncos at Buck Shaw Stadium.
