PORTLAND, Ore. – The BYU Cougars dominated the boards and used a balanced scoring effort to cruise to a 105-60 victory over the Portland Pilots Thursday night in West Coast Conference men's basketball action at the Chiles Center. The Cougars complete the season sweep of the Pilots and remain in second place in the league standings.
The Cougars (15-4, 6-2 WCC) racked up a 46-12 rebounding margin for the game and shot 63 percent from the field. Gideon George finished with career-highs of 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead six BYU players in double figures.
Junior forward Eddie Davis finished with a team-high 17 points, while Latrell Jones added 11 points for the Pilots (6-11, 0-8).
All nine Cougars that saw the court in the first half scored and the Pilots were held scoreless for the final 4:10 of the period as BYU took a 52-30 lead into the break.
An 11-0 run early in the second half sparked another onslaught from the Cougars as the margin grew down the stretch.
BYU shot a blistering 63 percent from three-point range (15-for-24) as eight different players connected from beyond the arc. The Cougars had a 48-16 edge in points in the paint and 18-0 margin in second chance points.
Portland made 11-of-21 three-pointers, but was held to 41 percent shooting overall and just 3-of-6 from the foul line.
Brandon Averette and Matt Haarms finished with 15 points apiece for BYU. Alex Barcello and Connor Harding chipped in 12 points each, while Caleb Lohner added 11.
The Pilots will continue WCC play on Saturday against the Pepperdine Waves. The game was a late change to the schedule announced on Thursday morning. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the contest will be aired on the WCC Network and 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT).
