DAVIS, Calif. – In the rubber match of their three-game series, the Portland Pilots fell to the UC Davis Aggies 8-1, giving Davis the series. Caleb Franzen was credited with the loss after allowing three runs in two innings while Zach Carrell gets the win for the Aggies with seven strikeouts in five innings.
The Pilots had no problem accumulating hits, but they couldn't drive runners home and left 12 players stranded on the bases. Portland did have nine hits, however, with Ben Patacsil leading the way. The third baseman was 3-for-3 and improved his season batting average to .563. Briley Knight was 1-for-4 on the day with the lone RBI for Portland in the top of the sixth.
UC Davis got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second. Shaun McHale launched a ball to left field that brought in Jake Brandel for the first run. Nick Iverson then brought McHale in to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead through two innings.
The Aggies kept the offense rolling in the third inning. Brandel started Davis off with an RBI single that zipped through the left side, bringing in Kyler Arenado. Ben Griffin followed that up with a sacrifice fly to center field that helped bring in Cooper Morrison. Add to that the RBI single from Colton Evans in the fifth and the Pilots suddenly found themselves down 5-0.
Portland finally broke the scoring seal in the sixth inning. Knight hit a fly ball to center field and Sam Brown tagged up and raced to home. The Pilots cut the Aggies' lead down to four, but Davis quickly responded and scored off a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to push the lead back to 6-1.
The Aggies iced the game with a two-run eighth inning that gave themselves an 8-1 lead. The Pilots mustered two hits in the inning from Ty Saunders and Jake Holcroft, but neither of them could find their way home. UC Davis took the game and the series from Portland.
Next up, the Pilots will be back on the road to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a non-conference series in Spokane, Wash. Game 1 will take place on Friday, March 5 at 3 p.m.
