STOCKTON, Calif. – The Portland Pilots drove in a season-high 18 runs in their 18-5 victory over the Pacific Tigers on Sunday. The win completed the sweep for the Pilots and pushed them to 3-0 in conference play.
The Pilots' 18 runs came off an impressive 19 hits, just two shy of the season high they set on Friday in their opener against Pacific. Portland tallied four home runs and 11 extra base hits as well. Chad Stevens led the way for Portland at the plate, batting 4-for-5 on the day with three doubles and a homer. Ben Patacsil, Briley Knight and Ethan Smith accounted for the other three home runs.
The pitching staff had another solid showing as well. Nick Nygard officially earned his second win of the season after allowing no runs and only three hits in four innings of work. Nygard also struck out five batters in the process.
Portland scored first thanks to an error at shortstop by Pacific, giving them an early lead after the first inning. The Tigers quickly took the lead back in the second, however, thanks to back-to-back home runs from Jeremy Lea and Thomas Gavello. The solo shots gave Pacific a 2-1 lead after two innings.
The Pilots would take back the lead in the fourth inning. Patacsil drove in Stevens with an infield single and made it back home two at-bats later off the sac fly from Knight. Portland had taken the lead, but not for long. Pacific quickly responded with a sac fly of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie things up at three.
The game blew open for Portland after that. Over the next two innings, the Pilots went on to score 12 runs. The Pilots started with six runs in the ffifth to triple their lead. Hunter Montgomery and Stevens compiled a pair of RBI doubles and then Patacsil and Knight stepped up to the plate for the first and second home runs of the game for Portland.
Portland kept their momentum rolling in the sixth, adding another six runs. Henry Cheney, Jake Tsukada and Henry Muench all brought runners home with RBI hits while Stevens hit the third homer of both the game and his season to make it 15-3 Portland. The Pilots added three more insurance runs in the final two innings to pad their lead. Pacific scored two late runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the damage was done and the Pilots won 18-5.
Next up, the Pilots will head to Eugene, Ore. on Tuesday, March 23 to take on the Oregon Ducks. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. and live stats and video will be available at PortlandPilots.com.
