SEATTLE, Wash. – The Washington Huskies scored two runs in the sixth inning and held on for a 2-1 win over Portland Tuesday night in a non-conference baseball game at Husky Ballpark. The Huskies improve to 5-6 overall with the win, while the Pilots fall to 3-7.
Portland freshman right-hander Jacob Dobmeier (0-1) pitched well in his first start for the Pilots, but the Huskies allowed just five hits in the game and no hits in the final five innings.
Dobmeier finished the day with 6.0 innings pitched and scattered six hits, no walks along with three strikeouts. He allowed the two runs in the sixth inning and was dealt the tough-luck loss. Nick Nygard came on and threw two scoreless innings of relief for Portland, but the Pilots could not get it going at the plate.
Portland threatened early with three hits in the first two innings before breaking through in the third. Jake Tsukada led off the frame with a single and moved into scoring position on Jake Holcroft's second hit of the day. Tracye Tammaro walked to load the bases and then Henry Cheney drew a two-out walk on four pitches to give Portland the 1-0 lead.
Dobmeier worked around an error to open the fourth inning that put a runner on second base with no outs for the Huskies. He retired the next three batters to get out of the potential jam.
The Huskies finally got to Dobmeier in the sixth inning with a one-out single from Braiden Ward followed by an RBI-double off the bat of Ramon Bramasco to tie the game. Michael Brown followed with a clutch two-out double to plate the go-ahead run.
Gabe Smith (1-1) earned the win in relief after tossing 3.1 innings without allowing a run. Colton Charnholm got five outs and then Davis Delorefice picked up the save by recording the last four outs of the game with three strikeouts.
The Huskies finished with seven hits for the game and allowed five for Portland, while both teams committed a pair of errors. Portland stranded nine runners and Washington left four on base.
Portland will return home to host a four-game series against the Utah Valley Wolverines this weekend at Joe Etzel Field. The series opens on Friday at 1 p.m. followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon. Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a noon start.
