PORTLAND, Ore.---The Pilots put on a dominating offensive display, outshooting Saint Mary's 10 to four in a West Coast Conference women's soccer match held at Merlo Field on Saturday afternoon, but in the end it was the Gaels just escaping with a 1-0 win on the day.
Eight different Pilots (3-3-3, 2-3-3 WCC) each had a chance to find the back of the net during the game, although none would find the equalizer to Saint Mary's (3-4-3, 3-3-2 WCC) opening score—which marks the first goal that Portland has conceded in over 520 consecutive minutes of play in their last six matches.
The Portland defense continued to keep the pressure on the Gaels' offensive front throughout, holding the visiting side to only four total shots after 90 minutes. Reigning two-time WCC Defensive Player of the Week Madison Zamora was needed for just one save in the match.
Kyllie Glock got Saint Mary's on the board within the first 11 minutes of the game, but the Pilots responded well with a dangerous play created by senior defender Ellie Winkelmann shortly after. The outside back won the ball near the right side of the Saint Mary's 18-yard box, and fought off several SMC defenders to send a shot just wide left of the goal frame.
Jamie Rita provided the home team's next scoring opportunity just before the end of the half, after Taryn Ries got around a defender near the end line to serve a nicely driven ball into the Gaels' box.
Despite coming out of the halftime break with only 10 players on the field, Ries produced yet another solid chance for the Pilots in the 53rd minute, bouncing it straight off the crossbar from a ball floated in by Winkelmann.
Portland managed to possess the ball on SMC's side for a majority of the second half, and freshman Aubrey Turner would find the Pilots' final scoring chance in the 75th minute, this time coming from a service off the foot of freshman forward Nedya Sawan.
Saturday also marked the final home appearances for this year's two graduating seniors, Ellie Winkelmann and Madison Zamora, who were both recognized ahead of the match for their stellar contributions during four-year careers in the Portland program.
The Pilots will conclude the spring WCC season next week when they hit the road for a matchup at No. 16 BYU on Saturday, April 17th. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. (PT).
