SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The San Francisco Dons hit a three-run bomb in the first inning and never looked back as they shut out the Pilots 5-0. The loss dropped the Pilots under .500 to 18-19 and put their WCC record at 10-6.
Christian Peters took the loss after allowing five runs in six innings of work. He also allowed nine hits and five walks during that span, striking out only one Don. Nick Nygard was the only other Portland pitcher to see the mound, with no hits, no runs and two strikeouts in two innings.
Portland's bats struggled to handle the electric pitching from USF starter Landen Bourassa. The righty tied the program record for strikeouts in a game with 16. Portland cobbled together only three hits on the day, with Jake Holcroft, Sam Brown and Ethan Loveless being the only Pilots to register hits.
The Dons scored early with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first. After San Francisco put two runners on base with a single and a walk, Jack Winkler stepped up to the plate and hit a moonshot out of Benedetti Diamond to make it 3-0 USF.
San Francisco put together two more runs in the third and fourth innings. Brandon Greim hit a grounder to Jake Tsukada at second and was thrown out at first, but Jordan Vujovich was able to make it home for the fourth run.
Vujovich would be involved in the final run for the Dons, hitting an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the fourth to make it a five-run lead for San Francisco. Despite Portland's best efforts, they just couldn't get past Bourassa, falling to the Dons 5-0.
The Pilots and Dons will play a doubleheader tomorrow to finish the series, with the first game set for 11 a.m. and the second game scheduled for 30 minutes after the end of that game. Live stats and video will be available at PortlandPilots.com.
