2MORAGA, Calif. – Brad McVay shined on the mound for Portland as the Pilots cruised past the Saint Mary's Gaels 3-0 in the series finale for their fourth shutout this season. The win gave Portland their second WCC series win of the year, improving their record to 13-13 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
McVay was the star for Portland on Saturday. The southpaw pitched seven shutout innings, allowed only five hits and struck out eight on his way to his fourth win this year. While the Pilots didn't have much happen at the plate with only seven hits, freshman first baseman Sam Brown stood out with a 3-for-4 outing along with a home run. The homer was Brown's second this year.
The Pilots got on the board first with Brown's homer in the second inning. Brown took the 0-1 pitch and hit a moon shot into the netting over the right field wall, giving Portland an early 1-0 lead.
After the early score, both teams were quiet at the plate. Both Saint Mary's and Portland got excellent performances out of their starters, with McVay shining for the Pilots and Ky Bush dealing for the Gaels. Bush had nine strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work today, but still took the loss due to Brown's homer in the second.
No scoring would happen again until the sixth inning, when Henry Muench scored off the wild pitch by Ryan Taurek. The Pilots would add one more run in the top of the ninth when Hunter Montgomery showed bunt but quickly swung to hit a grounder to left field, bringing in Brown and settling the score at its final.
The Pilots will be back in Oregon for their next game when they travel to Eugene for their second game this season against the Oregon Ducks. The two teams will play on Tuesday, Apr. 6 at 2 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PortlandPilots.com.
