PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots bounced back after allowing five runs in the first three innings, but couldn't overtake the Gonzaga Bulldogs as the Zags won 6-3. Gonzaga clinches the series and pushes the Pilots under .500 at 22-23. Portland is now 13-10 in conference play.
Brad McVay took the loss after allowing five runs in the first three innings. McVay rallied after that and ended his day with seven strikeouts. Eli Morse also made an appearance in this one, allowing only two hits and striking out four in three innings.
The Pilots struggled to make solid contact consistently, with only four hits as a team. Briley Knight and Hunter Montgomery, however, did both have home runs on the day. Chad Stevens and Brett Gillis were the only other batters to record hits on the day, going 1-for-3 and 1-for-4 respectively.
Gonzaga got the scoring started once again in the first inning. After McVay walked two straight batters, Mason Marenco stepped to the plate and hit a three-run homer, pushing the Zags to an early 3-0 lead.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the third inning, with Marenco hitting a sacrifice fly and Grayson Sterling driving in a run off a single. But the Pilots finally responded in the bottom of the inning. Montgomery sent a ball over the left field wall with no runners on to make it only 5-1 Gonzaga after three. The homer was his fifth of the season.
Knight followed that up in the next inning with a no-doubt two-run shot over the right field wall. The dinger was Knight's sixth of the season for the center fielder, good for second on the Pilots.
Unfortunately for Portland, that homer in the fourth would be the last time a Pilot would step on home base. The Zags fended off the bats, holding Portland hitless in the final three innings. Gonzaga would score once more off an RBI triple from Jack Machtolf to settle the score at its final of 6-3.
The Pilots and Bulldogs will play their final game tomorrow at 12 p.m. Portland will also honor their seniors before the game. Live stats and video will be available at PortlandPilots.com
