SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In their season finale, the Portland Pilots avoided a sweep by defeating the San Diego Toreros 6-2 at Fowler Park. The win puts the Pilots' record at 24-26 overall and 14-13 in WCC play to end the season.
After pitching a stellar seven innings, Christian Peters earned the win. Peters struck out eight batters in this outing, allowing only two runs and four hits in the process. Eli Morse closed the game out for the Pilots, striking out three batters while allowing no hits or runs.
The Pilots had six runs on the night off seven hits. Sam Brown was the only Pilots to post multiple hits on the day, going 2-for-5 with three RBI's thanks to a three-run homer in the second inning. Chad Stevens was also 1-for-3 with a double while Jake Holcroft and Ben Patacsil each added triples.
The Pilots brought in a run in the first inning to get the scoring started. With runners on second and third, Holcroft hit a grounder that put Brown out at third, but allowed Stevens to score. That quickly made it 1-0 Portland.
Portland exploded for five runs the following inning, taking advantage of some costly errors by San Diego. The Pilots scored two runs off the throwing error by Shane McGuire and then added three more runs after Brown hit a bomb over the right field wall with two runners on base. All the sudden the Pilots found themselves up 6-0.
The Toreros responded in the third inning with two runs of their own. Peters threw a wild pitch and McGuire took advantage by speeding home and sliding just under the throw to put San Diego on the board. Then Caleb Ricketts got home off another error by the Pilots, this time committed by Brown. The third inning saw the Toreros cut Portland's lead to four.
The Pilots shut down the Toreros from the fifth inning on, however. Portland allowed zero hits in the final four innings and gave only one batter a free base after Peters walked Cody Jefferis in the seventh inning. The Pilots held strong and took the win 6-2.
