PORTLAND, Ore. – Chad Stevens was 2-for-5 with a game-sealing grand slam as the Pilots won 6-2 over the Pepperdine Waves to take the series. The win puts the Pilots back at .500 with a 21-21 overall record. The win also puts them at 13-8 in WCC play.
The pitching staff was stellar for Portland. Brad McVay earned his sixth win of the season, allowing only two runs and two hits while adding seven strikeouts in six innings. Christian Peters had a solid relief performance as well, going three innings with five strikeouts, one hit and no runs.
The bats were working in Portland's favor, as they scored six runs off 10 hits. Eight out of nine batters recorded hits for the Pilots, with Stevens and Nich Klemp being the only players with multiple hits. Klemp was 2-for-3 at the plate.
The scoring didn't start until the third inning. Pepperdine drove in two runs thanks to an RBI double from Billy Cook and a sacrifice fly from Aharon Modlin. The RBI from Cook was his ninth of the series. The Waves led 2-0 after three innings.
The Pilots responded in the fifth inning. Ben Patacsil hit a chopper to first base that gave Klemp just enough time to get home. Jake Holcroft followed that up with a single to left field that brought home Stevens and made it 2-2.
Portland overtook the Waves in a big way in the next inning. With the bases loaded, Stevens stepped up to the plate and skied a ball over the left field wall for a grand slam. That brought in four runs and made it 6-2 Portland. Peters and company were able to fend off the Waves and hold on for a win, giving them the series.
The Pilots will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Pullman, Wash. to take on the Washington State Cougars. First pitch for that game is set for 1 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stat and video options.
