PORTLAND, Ore.---The Pacific Tigers overcame the Pilots 3-0 in a West Coast Conference volleyball match held at the Chiles Center on Thursday evening. Pacific won the match with set scores of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-10.
Jayde Harris ended the game with a match-high 12 kills, Paloma Bowman chipped in 14 assists and seven digs, and Grace Zilbert added five assists and seven digs for the home side. Junior setter Noelani Helm also produced a solid all-around performance, finishing with four kills, 14 assists, and six digs.
Â
Pilots freshman Emma Swett picked up the game's opening kill, and both teams would trade points to draw the score at 4-4. Pacific (5-10, 2-2 WCC) managed to gain a two-point edge soon after, and Swett closed that gap down to one with her second kill in the frame. The Tigers maintained the edge following, but back-to-back attacks from Chelsey Harmon kept Portland (4-8, 1-2 WCC) in it through the middle of the set. Two more Harris kills looked to bring the Pilots closer, but the Tigers held on in the end to go ahead 1-0 on the match.
Â
Harris got the Pilots off to an early lead to begin the second set, scoring three times and teaming up for a block with Jiana Lawson to hand Portland the 4-1 advantage. The Tigers closed that gap down to just one minutes later, but that's when the Pilots put together a nice run—including kills from Harris and Helm—to jump ahead by six at 10-4. Points would go back and forth through the middle of the set, until the Tigers were able to climb their way back in it, swinging all the momentum to close it out for the 2-0 lead overall.
Â
Pacific carried that energy right into the third frame, eventually sealing the game in just three sets.
Â
"Tonight wasn't our night," said head coach Megan Burton. "Pacific is a good serving and passing team and they executed those skills better than us tonight. We had moments of playing UPVB but we need to work on consistently performing well over time."
Â
"Every night in the WCC is a battle and you have to come ready to compete and play at a high level," said Burton. "We get an opportunity to bounce back against a very good Saint Mary's team on Saturday."
Â
The Pilots will return to action on Saturday, October 2, when they host the Saint Mary's Gaels in an afternoon showdown at the Chiles Center, starting at 12 p.m.
