SEATTLE, Wash. – In their final match in Seattle, the Portland Pilots fell to the Seattle Redhawks 1-0 at Championship Field. The loss puts the Pilots at 2-3-0 on the year.
Jolie St. Louis was the lone scorer in this one, doing so in the 42
nd minute. It was the first shot and goal of St. Louis's career.
Seattle boasts a strong attack, and they put that on display right from the start. They alternated well between building up slowly out of the back and using long balls to create quick-strike opportunities. The Redhawks tried to catch the Pilots off-guard, but freshman keeper Bre Norris let nothing by her early.
The Redhawks employed a high press more frequently as the match progressed in hopes of turning a Portland mistake into an easy goal. Seattle's pressure was significant, but it also opened up opportunities for the Pilots to make a break on the counterattack whenever they broke the press. Opportunities were more plentiful for the Pilots, but no score would come in the first due to some errant passes.
The hard work put in by Seattle paid off -- much to the dismay of the Pilots -- in the 42
nd minute. Jolie St. Louis corralled a long ball and played a through ball to the right side of the field. Initially looking like it would roll to no one, Gabe Jillings burst onto the ball and immediately played a cross back to St. Louis. The freshman took a quick touch and launched a left-footed shot just out of Norris's reach, making it 1-0 Seattle heading into the half.
The second half began and the Pilots looked a bit more controlled. Instead of searching for constant counterattacks, Portland looked to maintain possession more consistently and hopes of building up to a score. The result was fewer erratic passes, with turnovers being less frequent for Portland to start.
Portland's slower play helped them stay in control, but it didn't lead to a ton of opportunities. Seattle did well to fend off any chances from the Pilots, with the backline handling any long balls Portland tried to send in. Portland would not find the back of the goal, as Seattle would hold strong to beat the Pilots 1-0.
Next up, the Pilots will be back home at Merlo Field for their match against the Colorado College Prowlers. The two teams will face off on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video links as well as tickets.
