PORTLAND, Ore. – Tyler Robertson scored 30 second half points and broke the Portland school record for free throws made (22) in leading the Pilots to a 98-91 win over crosstown rival Portland State Friday at the Chiles Center.
Robertson had just two points at the half as the game was tied at 42-42, but the Melbourne, Australia native erupted after intermission to finish with a career-high 32 points. He knocked down 22-of-24 free throws, establishing new records for both makes and attempts. The previous record(s) was held by Jim Winters who was 20-for-23 against Seattle U on Feb. 12, 1956.
The Pilots (3-0) had four players score in double figures as Kristian Sjolund tacked on 16 points and Moses Wood chipped in as well with a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Portland out-rebounded Portland State 43-36 in Friday's game, led by Wood's 11 boards. The Pilots also grabbed 12 offensive rebounds and scored 18 second chance points.
Portland did a great job disrupting Portland State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Chika Nduka led the way individually for the Pilots with two rejections.
How It Happened
After falling behind 27-16, Portland went on a 7-0 run with 8:57 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Alden Applewhite, to narrow its deficit to 27-23. The Pilots continued to narrow the gap and tied the game at 42-42 heading into halftime. Portland got a boost from behind the arc in the period, hitting six shots to account for 18 of its 42 points.
Portland State then snagged an 83-81 advantage before Portland responded by going on an 8-0 run to seize an 89-83 lead with 1:37 to go in the contest. The Pilots kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 98-91 win. Portland got out on the break in the period, scoring 14 fast break points.
