SAN MATEO, Calif. – Portland Pilots Men's Soccer goalkeeper George Tasouris has been named to the All-WCC All-Academic Team. This is the first time in his career he's made the team. Six other Pilots also earned honorable mention in Sebastian Nava, Greg Tracey, Buba Fofanah, Nick Fernandez, Jacob Babalai and Nick Denley.
In order to qualify for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.2 while also having been an important reserve or starter who played in 50% of their team's games. Each nominee also must hold at least sophomore academic standing with at least one year in residence with the nominating team.
Tasouris made the team after a stellar year both on and off the field. For the Pilots, he was named the WCC Co-Goalkeeper of the Year and also earned All-WCC Honorable Mention. Tasouris led the WCC in save percentage (.774), goals-against average (0.91) and shutouts (eight). Tasouris played a hand in all 10 shutouts for the Pilots this year, the most for the team since 1990. He started every match for Portland and ranked seventh nationally in goalie minutes played (1,875:57). He posted a 3.55 GPA while pursuing a master's degree in higher education and student affairs.
The Pilots are coming off their best season in 27 years, finishing the year 15-3-3 and advancing all the way to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, the farthest they've gone since 1995. They led the WCC in nearly every team category and nationally ranked third in goal differential (32), fourth in goals (51) and total points (154), seventh in win-lost-tied percentage (.786), eighth in scoring offense (2.43), ninth in points per game (7.33) and assists (52) and 11th in assists per game (2.48).
