PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (16-8) dropped their final game against the Washington Huskies (14-10) 7-3 in Portland. The loss means the Pilots and Huskies officially split the season series.
Stu Flesland III was the winning pitcher with no runs or hits allowed in 3.1 innings pitched. Brock Gillis took the loss, pitching four innings with two runs allowed and three strikeouts.
The bats were silent for the Pilots until the bottom of the eighth. They finished with three runs off four hits. Trace Tammaro was the only batter with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI's. Spencer Scott and Jake Holcroft were the only other Pilots to record a hit.
No hits or runs occurred in the first three innings. Washington changed that trend in the fourth, driving in two runs. Caleb Morales hit a two-run bomb over the left-center field wall that put the Huskies up two.
The Huskies followed that up with another run in the fifth inning. McKay Barney hit a one-run double that made it 3-0 Huskies. Jake Leitgeb added to that lead in the sixth, driving in two runs off a hard single. The Huskies held a five-run lead.
Washington scored one more run in the eighth to make it 6-0 before the Pilots scored in the bottom of the inning. Tammaro hit his two-run double, then Sean Mulcare brought Tammaro home with a sacrifice fly. The Huskies scored one more run off a solo homer from Will Simpson to put the score at its final.
The Pilots will be back on the road this weekend for their third WCC series of the season against the Loyola Marymount Lions. The first game will take place on Friday, April 1 at 6 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stream and stats.
